Tezpur University is counted among the top universities in the country. It is a central university located in Tezpur town of Assam. Tezpur University was established in the year 1991 by an Act of Parliament, by the then prime minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao, who chaired the opening of the university.

Tezpur University has recently been ranked 601-800 in the world and 100 in Asia.

The university aims to offer interdisciplinary and employment oriented courses to meet the regional and local aspirations and the development needs of the state of Assam. The courses offered by the university is to promote research in areas which are of special and direct relevance to the region and in emerging areas in Science and Technology.

Tezpur University was initially operated from the premises of Darrang college and for a while from Tezpur Law College. However, later on an ancestral estate of 2500 bigha of land received from the British government in favour of the peasants was donated to the university by KalaguruBishnuprasadRabha. Hence, the present-day Tezpur University stands on the land donated by him. The campus is situated at Napaam, which is about 15 kms east of Tezpur, the headquarters of the Sonitpur district of Assam.

There are provisions for visitors to stay in the university guest house. Students may choose to stay in any of the five men's or seven women's hostels.

Admission Process in Tezpur University

The eligible candidates are required to apply online for admission to various courses in Tezpur University. They are required to sit for Tezpur University Entrance Exam (Group Discussion and/or Interview, as required) for admission to any courses in the University.

Exam Pattern of Tezpur University

Undergraduate Courses: All Undergraduate Degree Courses are held in six semesters (3 years). The exams are held in the month of May-June and November-December. However, the engineering courses are held for a duration of 4 years (8 semesters).

Integrated courses: The integrated courses are held for a duration of 5 years

Post Graduate Degree Courses: The post graduate degree courses are held in 2 years (4 semesters). The exams are held in the month of May-June and November-December.

PhD Programs: The Phd programs are held for a maximum duration of 5 years.

M.Phil. programs: The M.Phil. programs are held for a duration of 1 year.

Post Graduate Diploma Courses: The Post Graduate Diploma Courses are held in 2 semesters (1 year).

Diploma Courses: The Diploma courses are held in 1 year. Candidates are required to sit for one annual examination.

Certificate Courses: The Certificate courses are either held in 6 months or 1 year, depending upon the course.
