Latest News on Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB)

November 16, 2023 (Guwahati): In a Cabinet Meeting held, the Assam Government has announced that the two distinct Boards of Education in Assam, i.e. Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) for HSLC (Class 10) & Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) for HS Final (Class 12) Exams are being merged to form a single entity and will be called the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB). Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah informed that, "SEBA & AHSEC have officially merged into a single entity, now named ASSEB."

The move comes in with the Assam Government's decision to actively implement the New Education Policy (NEP) and with an aim to enhance the development, regulation & quality of the school education system in the state. The proposal to merge the 2 Boards of Education had come earlier in June 2023 and with this move, the State Government aims to achieve a more unified way of regulating the School-level education in the state of Assam. It is to be noted that, every year, over 4 lakh students appear for the HSLC Exams and over 3.5 lakh students appear for the HS Final Exams in Assam. The new board ASSEB will now overlook education at both levels now.

The State Government has also informed its decision to do away with the HSLC (Class 10) Exams being conducted by SEBA from 2024. The Class 10 exams in the state will be conducted as class examinations from the 2024-25 academic session. This move is also a step towards achieving a more integrated & effective educational framework for the state, which sees a large number of students every year appearing for the State Board Exams. SEBA was formed in 1962 and has Class IX & X under it, whereas the AHSEC was established in 1984 and has Classes XI & XII under it. With the formation of ASSEB, Classes IX-XII will be now under one Board. The ASSEB is also likely to have a Chairman, 2 Vice-Chairmen, and 3 Controllers of Examinations.
