Gauhati University also known as GU, is a premier institution of Post-Graduation, Engineering and research. The University is presently in its 70th year of existence, and is the oldest and largest university in the entire North Eastern Region. The university was established under the Gauhati University Act (Assam Act XVI of 1947) in 1948.

Gauhati Universityowns a beautiful and green campus situated in the western part of Guwahati, in the Jalukbari area. The university, through various teaching departments in its campus and the affiliated colleges spread over the lower Assam area, is imparting higher education in various branches of learning.

There are a total of 43 departments within 7 faculties. The university has fully equipped laboratory facilities in all the science departments. The Central Library boasts of more than 4 lakh books, periodicals, journals and offers a healthy reading atmosphere to its students.

The Institute of Distance and Open Learning is another important part of Gauhati University besides various research centers such as Women's Study, NE Historical Studies, Population Research, Disabilities Studies, courses in Turkish and Persian language, Folklore Research. The university is proud to produces a good number of research scholars every year, thus occupying a well-built place in the research pasture of the country.

Gauhati University aspires to invigorate its educational leadership and is planning to transform into an institution of intellectual as well as moral development from an institution of higher education. The university also aims to carry out research works on the frontier areas of knowledge.

Admission to UG and PG Courses in Gauhati University (GU)

The candidates are required to sit for an entrance exams for admission to PG courses in GU. The entrance tests are conducted by the respective departments. However, for admission to Engineering courses, candidates are selected through JEE (Main) and CEE (Assam). For PG courses in Engineering, one has to get a good GATE score to apply in Gauhati University.

The Master of Arts Examinations (MA) is held in four parts, in May-June and November-December.

All M.Sc courses are of two-year held in four-semesters

All Bachelor Degree Courses in Engineering is a 4-Year degree held in eight semesters

All Master Degree Courses in Engineering is a 2-Year degree held in four semesters

All LLM courses are of two-year held in four-semesters

MBA courses are of two-year held in four-semesters.
